Waldorf Astoria Goes Green With 300,000 Bees

Honeybee at Waldorf Astoria
One of New York’s iconic hotels are about to go green in an unusual way; adding beehives to their top floor. The bees will be kept on the rooftop and it’s expected to be around 120,000 bees at the moment, but the insects are multiplying quickly. In the end of 2012, Waldorf expect to have around 300,000 honeybees living there. Instead of having to buy honey from any supermarket, the luxury hotel can now brag about having their own swarm of honeybees.

Hotels with honeybees in NY

Were Waldorf Astoria the first hotel in USA with hives for honeybees? No, not even first in New York. Intercontinental New York at Times Square is the first NY hotel to install beehives.

How will visitors enjoy having bees at the property?

Waldorf Astoria seems to believe that the honeybees will not harm anyone and are going to offer tours of the hives.
