Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
There are a few true classic musicals that never seem to age, and no matter how old we are, we want our children and our children’s children to experience the story that is Annie. Based on the comic strip called Little Orphan Annie, by Harold Gray, the story of Annie was transformed into a smash Broadway hit show opening in 1977.
Nominated for 11 Tony awards and taking home no less than 7, Annie, the Musical had a record breaking 2377 shows until it closed in the early 1980’s. Well known actors, that were just children then, like Sarah Jessica Parker, had their first debut into the acting world, and the exciting world of Broadway. The story is about 11 year old Annie, who is a kind, caring and optimistic young orphan girl, who has her beloved rescue dog, Sandy by her side. The story is about her adventures at the orphanage that is run by an alcoholic matron, Miss Hannigan. The tale evolves and introduces Daddy (Oliver) Warbucks, Annie’s wealthy benefactor and Grace Farrell, Mr Warbuck’s loyal secretary, who loves Annie like her own child.
Annie’s adventures move her into Oliver Warbucks home, and it is he who starts a massive search for her biological parents. Along the way Annie, becomes somewhat of a celebrity as Franklin D. Roosevelt, the president of the United States assists them in the search for Annie’s birth parents. The entire community comes together, joined by Annie’s story and her infectious enthusiasm for life. Of course, there’s a dark side to the story – one of deception and deceit, but without spoiling the plot, it all works out for the best in the end.
