New York First to Penalise Large Sugary Drinks?
Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, has suggested to ban over sized sugary drinks and sodas from restaurants. The outlaw of sale of large sizes of sodas, ice teas and similar
beverages cover only drinks greater than 16 ounces (eg. 45 cl) in restaurants and other public places. The proposed ban of sugary drinks may go live as soon as March 2013, but there are yet many to have their say.
Diet drinks such as Diet Coke (Coke Light), natural fruit juices and milkshakes would not be covered in the ban. Reasons for the new policies are that over 58 % of New Yorkers are overweight.
So is the ban of carbohydrates rich drinks unique? According to our research, it seems like NY might be the first city in the world to ban large drinks full of sugar.
How do Coca Cola respond? A senior executive with the company told The Associated Press that Bloomberg’s proposal to ban the sale of large sodas unfairly singles out an industry. Coca Cola further
comments saying that the solution is too simple and would not solve the underlying issues with any obesity problems in New York.
