Has New York been inspired by London’s current free WiFi deal? No, it’s actually the other way around. New York City actually enabled WiFi already in 2011, but it’s not been free before August 2012.
Why did it take so long for subways to get connected? New York’s subway system is 105 year old and very complex system. Infrastructure constraints making it difficult to build underground, says William Bane, CEO of Transit Wireless to Washington Post.
How can New York’s subway offer free WiFi?
The free WiFi in NYC is not paid by the public, rather by sponsorship. Large cities like New York have very interesting demographic, creating unique opportunities for advertisers to reach high earning professionals. Perhaps it’s no surprise that Google offers sponsor New Yorks free WiFi until September 6th. Currently, only 23rd Street 8th Avenue, 14th Street 8th Avenue, 14th Street 7th Avenue and 14th Street 6th Avenue can provide free WiFi services to commuters and New York visitors.
