Since New York banned trans fat in restaurant food in 2008, restaurant diners have consumed in average 2.4 gram less trans fat per lunch, according to a recent study.

When the new rules banning all but the smallest amounts of trans fat went live over 4 years ago, NY was pioneering. Restaurant can since 2008 no longer contain more than maximum 0.5 gram of trans fat per serving and cannot be prepared with partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.

The changes seems to be efficient. Researchers from New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene have found a significant reduction in consumption of trans fat, leading to better cardiovascular health.

Alice Lichtenstein, director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at Tufts University in Boston, said the research shows “that public health initiatives, if done right, seem to work.” A key factor, she said, was that diners didn’t have to choose: “The environment has been shifted so that you automatically will get the healthier option.”

Michael R. Bloomberg, mayor of New York for 12 years, has taken an active role to improve public health. Hopefully, his plan to ban large sugary drinks at restaurants will also be reality within short.

So next time you visit restaurants in New York, you can be glad to know that it might be healthier than food in UK.

One of the best Mexican chefs in America, Richard Sandoval, now open up his new Peruvian restaurant in central NY called Raymi.

The new gourmet dining place can be described as an modern Peruvian restaurant as dynamic as the country it celebrates. Peru is a country blending the Spanish, Japanese and Chinese spirits into their food. Even though the menu covers a wide range of seafood, there are also many vegetarian and meat alternatives. Prices tend to be very affordable.

Peruvian drinks

Enjoy the national spirit of Peru, Pisco. It’s made from a single distillation of wine, which follows a strict production method. Pisco comes in many different flavours, often with various type of fresh fruit. To the right you can see a photo of Pisco Sour. There are obviously many other interesting drinks with Peruvian spirits, such as gooseberry or chichamorada, along with juices and wine at Raymi.

Getting hungry? Raymi is located at 43 West 24th Street New York, NY 10010 and reservations for Raymi can be done at +1 212 929 1200.
New York Stock Exchange, NYSE, has for the second time in history become the stock market of choice for Burger King.

The company went public with ticker symbol ‘BKW’ on Wednesday, closing at $15.01 (£9.55), up 3.5%. Between 1954 and 2006, the company has been privately owned, and later listed on NYSE for 4 years before it was sold to 3G capital. At the moment, only 16 % of the shares are available to the publish, since the two main owners (3G Capital and Justice Holdings) are both bound to hold onto their stake for between 6 months and 1 year. In April, the popular burger chain launched it’s biggest menu expansion in quite some time, with new smoothies, salads and ice coffee.

Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, has suggested to ban over sized sugary drinks and sodas from restaurants. The outlaw of sale of large sizes of sodas, ice teas and similar beverages cover only drinks greater than 16 ounces …

Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, has suggested to ban over sized sugary drinks and sodas from restaurants. The outlaw of sale of large sizes of sodas, ice teas and similar
beverages cover only drinks greater than 16 ounces (eg. 45 cl) in restaurants and other public places. The proposed ban of sugary drinks may go live as soon as March 2013, but there are yet many to have their say.

Diet drinks such as Diet Coke (Coke Light), natural fruit juices and milkshakes would not be covered in the ban. Reasons for the new policies are that over 58 % of New Yorkers are overweight.

So is the ban of carbohydrates rich drinks unique? According to our research, it seems like NY might be the first city in the world to ban large drinks full of sugar.

How do Coca Cola respond? A senior executive with the company told The Associated Press that Bloomberg’s proposal to ban the sale of large sodas unfairly singles out an industry. Coca Cola further
comments saying that the solution is too simple and would not solve the underlying issues with any obesity problems in New York.
